Lorena Chavez receives Hal Israel Community Service Award
Hal Israel Community Service Award:
Recognizes a young lawyer who gives generously of his or her time and knowledge to the community through Bar-sponsored programs and initiatives. The award is named in honor of Herman Allen "Hal" Israel, whose great mind and generous spirit inspired all who knew him. This award is not given annually -- it is only given to recognize exceptional service.
Lorena E. Chavez, a member of Los Abogados Hispanic Bar Association, volunteers her time to help provide essentials to the impoverished community of Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico.
During law school, Chavez, who is fluent in Spanish, participated in the Maricopa County Public Defender's Legal Clinic where she represented numerous indigent clients in matters ranging from preparation for trial, sentencing, preliminary and evidentiary hearings.
She joined Engelman Berger, P.C. in 2007 after graduating cum laude from Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. Her education included externships for the Hon. Mary H. Murguia, United States District Court, District of Arizona, and for the Hon. Daniel A. Barker, Arizona Court of Appeals.
She is a long-time Arizona resident, having grown up in Yuma and Ciudad Morelos, Baja California, Mexico.
